Heredity Review

Congrats! You have made it to the last week of 6th grade! We will be spend today reviewing for the quiz on Wednesday.

We have been spending the majority of our time looking out how genetic traits are passed from two parents to offspring. But what happens when there is only one parent? What would the offspring look like? Remember we will also have our quiz on Wednesday of next week.

Punnett Square

We will be working on Punnett Square work today. We will start class with a short video on how Punnett Squares are complete and why we sue them. You will go through a few practice activities on your own. You will have to fill a Punnett Square on your quiz. Make sure you have your Heredity vocabulary sheet, you will need to know a few words to be successful on your final worksheet.

Friday - Bill Nye Genes

Because of the 5th graders coming to visit, classes with only be about 30 minutes. We will be watching Bill Nye - Genes. Please pay close attention to the video, there is some very good information in it.

Trait Survey

We will be completing the Trait Survey today. You will be looking at a handful of traits that both you and your classmates have. We will look and see if you have more dominant or recessive traits both as an individual and a class. The survey also consists of creating a graph and completing a few questions.

 Bell Ringer - Continue to work on your vocabulary from last class. When you have completed that copy down the  chart from the board in your notebook.

Genetics

We are getting ready to start the last mini unit of the year Genetics! We will look at how and why you have the appearance and traits that you do. This is unit will only take about 2 weeks. Stay focused, the genetics quiz will be the last one in the grade book.

Nervous System Quiz

We will be taking the Nervous System Quiz today. We will go through a short Kahoot to help review before the quiz. The majority of the questions are directly related to our quiz, but there are few fun fact questions. Remember Friday is the track meet, there will be no Science. Weather looks great so enjoy the day.

We will have our Nervous System quiz on Thursday. We will spend today reviewing a few scenarios on when you would use your senses to gather information. Remember to study your notes from earlier this week.

The Nervous System

We will watch a video for the first half of class on how the Nervous System responds to certain situations and how the brain can be tricked based on perceptions we have. The second half of class we will go through some of the different areas of the brain and what they specifically control.

Reaction Time and Nervous System

If your class has not completed the reaction time activity you will do that first. After the reaction time activity, you will get with a partner and read through the section on the Nervous System. As you read the section, be prepared to create a short summary on how the Nervous system interprets information.

Different Minds

We are going to complete an activity today looking at how your mind functions. We will go through 4 different stations and you will be able to see how different minds/brains respond to situations/stimuli. You will be completing these activities at your table working with the person next you. You will also have to record how fast your are completing the different activities and then  compare your results ro the rest of the classes.

What is it and how does it respond to the environment? We will spend a few days focusing on the Nervous System and how it functions. Looking specifically at cause and effect, looking at how the Nervous system responds to different situations that occur.

We have spent the past few weeks focusing on how systems work together. With the Pushing The Limits Video and the Handout we have identified a few general ways systems work together. Today you will be taking a quiz over this topic.

We will be finishing up how systems work together today and plan on taking the quiz on Wed/Thurs. depending on your Science day. We will spend the first part of class looking at your heart activity. The second part will be looking at how systems work together and try and come up with a general statement to identify how all systems work together.

We will spend the first part of class finishing up the Pushing the Limits video. Remember to be looking for ways that systems work together and a be thinking of a general statement that could be created on HOW systems work together. The last 30 minutes will be spent completing the heart rate activity.

Systems and How They Work

We are going to quickly go over the human body guide. After that we will break into small groups and you will discuss how the systems work together during your activity. MAKE SURE YOU HAVE YOUR NOTEBOOK OR PAPER YOU ANSWERED YOUR SYSTEMS ACTIVITY QUESTIONS ON.

Systems Outside Activity

We will be going outside today for our systems activity. When you finish the bell ringer please copy down the four questions on the board in your notebook. We will be going outside in about 10 minutes. After the outside activity we will spend the rest of the class working on your human body guide. When you finish the guide I have a few extra activities for you to work on.

Systems, Pretest and Guide

We will continue working on systems, we will take the human body pretest and work on the human body guide. The guide will be your source on what each system does and some of their specific organs. As we work through the unit and look at different systems, the guide will be an easy and quick way for you to see what these different systems do.

Systems, what are they?

We have wrapped up our cells unit and moving into systems. We will specifically look at how the body is a group of interacting systems that maintain a balance and keep us functioning. We will work on identifying what a system is and how they function. We will look at all body systems during the unit and then focus specifically on the nervous system.

Finish Cell Investigation

We will be wrapping up your cell investigation today. The first 20-25 minutes will be finalizing your sources. From there we will have a short discussion on what you are finding and you will have an opportunity to talk to your classmates and see some of the specific things they discovered. Your final claim and reflection needs to be completed before Friday.
