Cheek Cell Lab

We are going to finish up with  the Prokaryotes and Eukaryotes articles during the first half of class. The second half will be spent looking at your cheek cells. Remember when we use the microscope that you need to be a team member and everyone takes turn focusing the microscope.

*Bell Ringer- With your table explain what homeostasis is and give a few examples.

Eukaryotes & Prokaryotes

We will discuss the differences between the two types of cells, prokaryotes and eukaryotes. You will need to read the articles of both types of cells and answer the questions at the bottom of each article. As you read through the articles be thinking about how each of these cells are built (structure) and how that relates to some of the jobs they do (function).

History of Cells & Microscope

We will gather a little background knowledge on the development of the microscope and the discovery of cells. This information will be important in understanding what cells are and lead into the different processes and importance of cells.

Microscope Lab

We will be using the microscope for the first time today. I will demonstrate how to handle and use the microscope. The class will be put in groups of 3-4 and you will be working together to focus the microscope and fill out a short worksheet on how to use the microscope. If you do a good job and properly using the microscope, you can use the rest of class to look at a variety of slides that we have.

Characteristics of Living Things

We will continue where we left off last week. Last week we went through and identified things you felt were living and why. Today we will look at the specific characteristics that all living things must have to be considered living. We will brainstorm individually & as a group, then research to find out what the experts say.

Is It Living?

We will continue with our Cell Unit today, before we start learning about cells we need to figure out how to identify whether or not something is living. We will spend the next two days working on what classifies something as living or nonliving.

11/19-20/15 Make Revisions and Complete Final

If necessary continue with your peer editing, once you are done use the feedback from your classmates to make any changes to your book that are needed. After that review your book and look over the rubric, which is attached to the blog under resources. Once you have looked over the book and are confident you have everything turn it in. After that you have one of two choices 1) you can use one of the following sites to create and publish a real book.
www.storyjumper.com
www.mystorybook.com
www.blurb.com
www.solentro.com

2) you can pick one of the two Current Science Magazines and read 2-3 articles and compete article reviews over them.

11/18/15 Peer Editing

You will work with your classmates to peer edit your book, I have created a peer editing checklist to go through and guide you through the process. Please take this very seriously, you are providing your classmates with important feedback and hopefully helping them to get an A/A+. Also I have your investigation over can matter be created or destroyed in the gradebook. Some of you need to go back and make changes to the packet. I have left you comments on what you need to do.

Bell Ringer - Have your children's book open and be ready to go in class.

11/16-17/15 Finish Page Layout & Rough Draft

Please start working on your page layout when you get in the class. Once I have taken attendance I will show you have to create a work cited page for the images you are using in your book. After you finish your page layout you need to independently start your rough draft. Your rough draft is due Wednesday. All you should need to do is copy your information from your page layout into the Children's Book google slides in classroom. You DO NOT need transitions or animations remember each slide is a page of a book not a slide of a presentation.

Bell Ringer - Start on your Page Layout

11/12-13/15 Continue Working on Book Outline & Page Layout

We will continue to work on your book outline. It should be completed during the 1st half of class. Remember your outline does not have to be exactly word for word what you are going to put in your book. It is an over view of the general info you are going to put in the book. When you are done with the outline please show it to me and then you can move on to your page layout.  Use the sources that are available to you on the blog - matter graphic organizer, matter vocab notes, properties PowerPoint & your packet. There is no Bell Ringer today, start on your outline when you get in the class. NO GAMES.

10/26-27/15 Can Matter Be Created Or Destroyed

We have just finished up with identifying matter by its properties. We have talked about and completed activities on Elements, Mixtures, Solutions & Compounds. You have a good understanding of the different types, but remember if you want to retake any of your quizzes you can.  We will be starting our test/research portion of the unit, you will be designing your own test to see if you can create or destroy matter. From there we will research to see if your claim, initial answer to can matter be created or destroyed, is right.

10/22-23/15 Solution/Compound Quiz & Concept Map

After you finish up your bell ringer please start studying for you solution/compound quiz. Remember it is the exact same format as the element/mixture quiz. After the quiz create a new concept map or web on what you know about matter. Here is a list of a few things that should be on the concept map: Properties, Mass, Volume, Atoms, Elements, Mixtures, Solutions, Compounds, States of matter & anything else you know. Provide definitions, examples, & make connections between the different concepts. This is your chance to brag about what you know about matter, the more the better. Unfortunately my daughter is sick today and I will not be at school, if you have questions on the concept map that the sub can not answer email me, I will try and check it as often as possible. Be respectful to the sub and good luck on the quiz.

10/14-15/15 Compounds: Splitting Water

We have spent time working on and observing the other 3 main types of matter. Today we are going to look at our final type, compounds. The activity to will be splitting a compound back into its original elements.  As we complete this activity think about how we split the compounds and water happens to the properties of the substances.
